This unfairness is taking place because of an issue that arose years ago in Elizabeth City. During the 1980's, a car company called Nissan wanted to construct a huge plant near the small city of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. In what was meant to be one of the biggest investments in the history of the company, the local government tried to interfere with the project, warning that it would hurt the local economy. A group of local residents, known as the Elizabeth City Six, began to agitate for the project to be stopped, warning that it would harm the surrounding neighborhoods, especially their small creek.
The North Carolina Highway Department attempted to dismiss the complaints by claiming that the creek was too small to attract large numbers of car sales. However, evidence came to light that showed that this claim was merely an attempt to intimidate the few citizens who had gathered to oppose the Ford Lincoln production plant. Several witnesses were then taken to court over the matter, and a ruling was eventually made in favor of the plaintiffs. Despite receiving a ruling in their favor, the car company still closed its facility.
When Ford decided to build another model of its popular Model T, it chose to build it in two different locations: one in Columbia, South Carolina; and one in Greenville, North Carolina. Because of the extremely high costs associated with relocating the manufacturing plant, the company built the new Model T in Nissan Greenville, allowing it to be constructed in a more economical manner. Unfortunately, this decision turned out to be disastrous for the citizens of Greenville. The reason for this was the extremely high amount of pollution which was released into the air from the Ford Motor Company plant during the move. Some people even claimed that they suffered from long-term symptoms of breathing in fumes which are present in all major cities that produce cars.
One of the worst effects of the Honda motor plant relocation is the effect which it has had on the surrounding neighborhoods. This area is primarily known as the African-American communities of Greensboro. In the years prior to the relocation, the residents of this part of Greensboro experienced a lot of tensions with the white community because of the color of the people who lived in the area. However, because of the excess of Honda cars which were being built in the area, these people began to feel threatened by the new so-called "Honda Curse." However, after the relocation, everything began to return to normal, and now the residents of Greensboro enjoy shopping, eating, and socializing in a safe and comfortable environment.
